Scratching the Surface: Orthopedic Article

Keith Edwards, executive vice president, Commercial offers insight to Orthopedic Design and Technology article

Boston, MA – May 23, 2022 – The May/June issue of ODT magazine includes an article that discusses orthopedic trends, challenges, considerations, additive manufacturing, and more. Not only does it feature a half page ad and some of our product photography, but it also includes input from our very own Executive Vice President of Commercial, Keith Edwards.

Key comments from Edwards include:

What trends and/or market forces are currently driving innovation in orthopedic surface modifications and coatings?

“The goal remains the same in orthopedic coatings: provide an implant surface that promotes osseointegration and is supported by strong preclinical and histologic evidence. Cost to the HCP institution is a key element as well as newer surface modifications must demonstrate superior healing characteristics to gain acceptance for higher costs. I believe surface coatings will become a standard and expected of all implants ahead. One long-sought wish but nascent offerings are antimicrobial coatings. Regulatory hurdles are immense, which will slow rollout and availability.”

How do you see the surface modification and coatings market evolving over the next five years?

“Implants with coatings will dominate the offerings ahead. Due to the considerable product lifecycles and inability to change coatings based on regulatory hurdles, the market is likely to remain stable and growing. A coating improvement may come once a poorly performing product is discontinued and next-generation products follow on.
